I know you all like to look at me, so here I am looking back at you too, and I'm naked and comfortable. Do you like to look at me?

My last competition was the International Grappling Competition held at the Florida Civic Center on 9/27/03. My opening round would be against a Brown Belt in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. My back ground in grappling is wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My opponent and I both weighed in at 234 pounds. When the match started we grabbed each other by the back of the neck in the classic wrestling collar elbow tie up. There was fear in the pit of my stomach, as I could feel neither one of us giving in to the other. I was pumped with adrenaline and my muscles started to exhaust after contracting them so hard. After a few minutes of the feeling out process my opponent made the first move; he attempted to change levels and take me down by shooting for my legs. At that time I immediately shrugged my opponent down pulling him in the same direction I felt his body was moving, then I spun behind him and got to his back throwing my legs around my opponent's legs in order to get the superior position. In search for a choke I feel my opponent trying to counter with an ankle submission. Knowing I could be in danger of being caught in a submission hold I look to end the contest with a concession hold of my own. As I go straight for the Jugular vein, choking out the competition or in my case the carotid artery.

Because I'm a submission grappler who doesn't care about Venus blood leaving the brain but I'm concerned about stopping in coming blood from the artery going to the brain. Arteries transport blood to organs, blood caries oxygen via red blood cells; so, if the blood supply does not reach the brain due to a physical blockage the brain shuts off and the individual passes out. If a tourniquet is left on for too long the individual may suffer from brain damage and death will eventually occur from lack of oxygen to the brain. Some times I may not be able to apply a choke in competition because the situation may not present it self; in that case I'm looking to end the match by a submission hold. What is a submission hold? A submission hold is a hold that is applied to the fulcrum points of the body in order to gain leverage to move the joint in the opposite direction that it is supposed to move. If the opponent doesn't concede the tendons and ligaments may tear at the insertion points of the body and in rare cases the bones may fracture. Getting back to the contest. My opponent gives up via choke out submission and I didn't have to transition to a joint manipulation. It felt great to get my hand raised in my opening contest! For the rest of the evening I would be quite competitive.

Do you wonder why some one would want to subject them self to this kind of punishment? Well let me start off with how the sport of submission is structured for safety. If an individual gets trapped in a choke or submission hold the person has an opportunity to concede by tapping the mat or tapping on the person who is applying the hold. When an individual taps out they are giving up and the contest is over. If the competitor is caught in a hold and does not give up and it's to late to escape the referee may signal for the contest to stop. In some cases the corner of the grappler may also stop the match. If an individual passes out then the officials are trained to revive the passed out fighter.
